Covid-19 India Update: 39,070 New Cases; Johnson and Johnson’s Single-Dose Vaccine Gets EUA By DCGI

Johnson and Johnson's vaccine can be the fifth vaccine after Covishield, Covaxin, Sputnik V and the upcoming Moderna that could bolster India’s chances of inoculating all adults by December 2021 amid the rising concerns of the third wave.

India reported 39,070 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, marginally higher than yesterday. 43,910 patients recovered during the last 24 hours. With this the recovery rate has increased to 97.39%. Daily positivity rate reaches 2.27%; less than 3% for last 13 days. India’s Active Caseload is currently at 4,06,822. Active cases now constitute 1.27% of total cases.

Southern states continue to remain a worry as India fights against the Covid-19 pandemic. The three most affected states recording maximum Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours are – Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.

Kerala reported 20,367 Covid-19 cases, 139 deaths and 20,265 recoveries in the last 24 hours. The state will begin Covid-19 vaccination drive for those above 60 years of age starting from 9 August to ensure that people get at least one dose by August 15. The drive is also aimed at vaccinating final year degree and post graduate students as well as teachers of primary schools.

India’s drug regulatory agency Drug Controller General of India has given emergency use authorisation to the single-dose vaccine of Johnson and Johnson. With this, Johnson and Johnson’s vaccine can be the fifth vaccine after Covishield, Covaxin, Sputnik V and the upcoming Moderna that could bolster India’s chances of inoculating all adults by December 2021 amid the rising concerns of the third wave.
