India recorded by far the fastest ever rise in weekly Covid-19 cases with a six-fold increase in infections in the week ending Sunday. The country reported 1,79,723 fresh Covid-19 cases, 12.5% higher than the previous day figure. 46,569 patients recovered during the last 24 hours. The recovery rate reaches at 96.62%. The daily positivity rate reaches at 13.29%. India’s active caseload currently stands 7,23,619, active cases stand at 2.03%.

Relatively six states namely Rajasthan (5,660), Kerala (6,238), Gujarat (6,275), Uttar Pradesh (7,695), Karnataka (12,000) and Tamil Nadu (12,895) reported maximum Covid-19 fresh cases in the last 24 hours.

According to the data given by Health Ministry, a total of 4,003 Omicron cases were reported in States and Union Territories of India so far. The three states that recorded more than 20,000 fresh Covid-19 in the last 24 hours are Maharashtra, West Bengal and Delhi.

Maharashtra reported 44,388 new Covid-19 cases, 15,351 recoveries, and 12 deaths in the last 24 hours. Mumbai recorded 19,474 Covid-19 cases and 7 deaths in the last 24 hours. West Bengal reported 24,287 new Covid-19 cases, 8,213 recoveries, and 18 deaths in the last 24 hours. Delhi logged 22,751 fresh Covid-19 cases, 10,179 recoveries, and 17 deaths in the last 24 hours.

In a bid to ramp up the vaccination process, India has administered the cumulative figure of 151.94 crore vaccine doses.

India began to administer Covid-19 vaccine precaution dose to 60+ age group, healthcare, frontline workers from today. Among these categories, only those who completed nine months after the second dose of vaccine were administered the precaution dose.

In the review meeting held yesterday by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, states and Union Territories were urged to further accelerate vaccine drive for adolescents in mission mode. PM Modi also directed that intensive containment and active surveillance should continue in clusters reporting higher cases. He will soon hold a review meet with Chief Ministers to discuss state-specific scenarios, best-practices, and the public health response.

In view of the rising Covid-19 cases, Mansukh Mandaviya will chair a Covid-19 review meet with health ministers of 5 states, 1 Union Territories today.

As cases of the new Omicron variant rise worldwide, other variants have also surfaced. Scientists working on genome sequencing have said that along with the original Omicron variant, its sibling BA.1 is dominantly co-circulating and rapidly replacing the Delta variant in Maharashtra and some other states.

Another strain of Covid-19 that combines delta and omicron was found in Cyprus. Scientists say that the new strain was named “Deltacron” due to the identification of omicron-like genetic signatures within the delta genomes.
