Covid-19 India Update: First Omicron Variant Case Detected In Delhi, Tally Reaches 5

The number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in a day crossed one crore on Saturday after more than two months, taking the total jabs given so far to over 127.5 crore, amid fears of the Omicron variant of coronavirus.

India reported 8,895 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, 3% higher than the previous day figure. 6,918 patients recovered during the last 24 hours. With this the recovery rate currently stands at 98.35%. The daily positivity rate reaches at 0.73%, less than 2% for the last 62 days.

India’s Active Caseload currently stands at 99,155.

Active cases now constitute less than 1% of total cases, currently at 0.29% which is the lowest since March 2020. After 3 cases detected from Gujarat’s Jamnagar, Maharashtra’s Dombivli and Delhi. India now has five confirmed cases of Omicron variant while several samples have been sent for genome sequencing and the results are awaited.

The Centre has raised concern over a sharp increase in daily cases of Covid-19 and rising mortality rates, particularly in five states of Odisha, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Mizoram and the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. Underlining the threat of the Omicron variant, health secretary Rajesh Bhushan wrote to all these states and J&K urging immediate steps to enhance surveillance of foreign arrivals, monitor emerging hotspots and ensure that all samples from Covid patients are sent for genome sequencing.

The government of Puducherry has made Covid-19 vaccination compulsory in the Union Territory with immediate effect. Relatively, the three most affected states recording maximum Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours are Kerala and Maharashtra.

Kerala reported 4,557 new Covid-19 cases, 52 deaths and 5,108 recoveries in the last 24 hours. Maharashtra reported 782 new Covid-19 cases, 770 recoveries and 14 deaths in the last 24 hours.

Preparations have been enhanced at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport wherein thermal screening areas, registration counters for RT-PCR tests, swab collection booths have been set up for the passengers from ‘at-risk’ nations. This came in the wake of the first case of new Omicron variant detected in the state. According to the state health department, a 33-year-old person from Kalyan-Dombivli who recently returned from South Africa was found positive for the new Omicron variant.

Meanwhile, Delhi recorded 51 new Covid-19 cases, 0 death and 61 recoveries in last 24 hours. Taking to Twitter, the Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has lauded the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for the successful Covid-19 vaccination drive in the country.
