Covid-19 India Update: Mandatory Swab Testing At Airports From All Arrivals From At-Risk Countries

Angola became the first southern African country to suspend all flights from its regional neighbours -Mozambique, Namibia and South Africa. Ghana is also set to make Covid-19 vaccine mandatory for targeted groups from January 2022.

India reported 8,309 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, marginally lower than yesterday. 9,905 patients recovered during the last 24 hours. With this the recovery rate currently stands at 98.34%. The daily positivity rate reaches at 1.09%, less than 2% for the last 56 days.

India’s Active Caseload currently stands at 1,03,859. Active cases now constitute less than 1% of total cases, currently at 0.30%. Relatively, the three most affected states recording maximum Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours are Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. Kerala reported 4,350 new Covid-19 cases, 19 deaths and 5,691 recoveries in the last 24 hours. Maharashtra reported 832 new Covid-19 cases, 841 recoveries and 33 deaths in the last 24 hours.

According to reports, a man who returned from South Africa to Dombivali in Thane district has recently tested positive for coronavirus. However, it is not confirmed whether the patient was carrying the Omicron variant, which was identified as the variant of concern by the WHO.

Tamil Nadu reported 736 new Covid-19 cases, 772 discharges and 09 deaths in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, Delhi recorded 32 new Covid-19 cases, 1 death and 33 recoveries in last 24 hours.

In a bid to ramp up the vaccination process, India’s has administered the cumulative figure of 122.41 Crore vaccine doses.

As cases rise globally and the fear of the new variant grows, several countries have imposed fresh restrictions on southern Africa, including key travel hub Qatar, the United States, Britain, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the Netherlands.

With the proposed resumption of international flights on December 15 under review, the government of India has issued fresh guidelines on Sunday, mandating RT-PCR test on arrival for all passengers from Covid at-risk countries.

The countries would include, UK, South Africa in Europe, Brazil, Bangladesh, Botswana, China, Mauritius, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Singapore, Hong Kong and Israel. Flyers also have to declare their travel details for the past 14 days.

While those testing positive will be isolated and their samples will be sent for genome testing, those testing negative will have to home-quarantine for a week and test on the eighth day.

The Centre has asked states and UTs to focus on containment, surveillance and increased vaccination coverage besides beefing up genome sequencing measures.
