Covid-19 India Update: Over 2 Lakh Daily New Cases, Delhi Reports Biggest Jump

India reported 2,47,417 fresh Covid-19 cases, 27% higher than the previous day figure. 84,825 patients recovered during the last 24 hours. The recovery rate reaches at 95.59%. The daily positivity rate reaches at 13.11%. India’s active caseload currently stands 11,17,531, active cases stand at 3.08%.

Relatively two states namely Kerala (12,742) and Tamil Nadu (17,934) reported maximum Covid-19 fresh cases in the last 24 hours.

According to the data given by Health Ministry, a total of 5,488 Omicron cases were reported in India so far. Joint Secretary, of the Union Health Ministry, Luv Aggarwal, has said that four states reported high positivity rates- West Bengal recording a positivity rate of at 32.18%, , Delhi with 23.1% Maharashtra with 22.39% and Uttar Pradesh at 4.47%.

The four states that recorded more than 20,000 fresh Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours are Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal and Delhi.

Maharashtra reported 46,723 new Covid-19 cases, 28,041 recoveries, and 32 deaths in the last 24 hours. Mumbai logged 16,420 new cases and 7 deaths in the last 24 hours. The state health department has said that Maharashtra is expected to see a spike in hospitalization of Covid-19 patients this month-end or in the first week of February. Karnataka reported 21,390 new cases, 1,541 recoveries and 10 deaths in the last 24 hours. West Bengal registered 22,155 fresh cases & 23 deaths in the last 24 hours. Delhi reported 27,561 new Covid-19 cases and 40 deaths in the last 24 hours, the highest single-day rise in eight months

In a bid to ramp up the vaccination process, India has administered the cumulative figure of 154.61 crore vaccine doses. Bharat Biotech has confirmed that Covaxin booster dose has shown to neutralize both Omicron and Delta variants of SARS-CoV-2.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will today interact with the Chief Ministers of all states on the Covid-19 situation at 4:30 pm via video conferencing.

The government’s top Covid-19 adviser VK Paul has said that Omicron is “not a common cold and a misconception that is spreading which needs to be slow down”. The announcement came a day after the country’s top epidemiologist called Omicron infections as mild as a cold and said everybody would likely catch it.
