A village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district has become the first village in India to vaccinate its entire adult population against COVID-19.
Adults in the Weyan hamlet, with a population of 362, have been fully vaccinated.
‘The village is located only 28 kilometres away from Bandipora district headquarters, but a distance of 18 kilometres has to be covered by foot as there is no motorable road,” said Dr Bashir Ahmed Khan, Chief Medical Officer of Bandipora.
Health experts believe that the task of vaccinating all the residents was even more difficult as the village consists of nomadic families who are constantly moving.
Villagers feel that this record could be achieved because of the efforts of the administration and health care workers.
The health care workers reached out to the villagers themselves instead of the villagers having to visit the vaccination centres.
“I am beyond thankful for the efforts put in by the healthcare team who visited this village and inoculated our young and old. This was an extremely important step”, says a local resident.
Meanwhile, the nationwide vaccination drive is continuing across the nation in full steam with tens of lakhs receiving their first and second doses every day via public and private channels.
