EXCLUSIVE: Is Sacrilege Row The Key Issue for Punjab Polls?

India Ahead’s Smita Sharma brings special ground reports from Faridkot, Punjab.

New Delhi: In June 2015, Guru Granth Sahib was found desecrated reportedly at a Gurudwara in Burj Jawahar Singh Wala district in Faridkot leading to protests in Punjab. The first incident of desecration was reported from Bargari, where torn pages of the holy scripture were found. A few protesting Sikhs were allegedly shot dead by the police while they were sitting in the demonstration against the desecration.

It’s an issue that is being investigated at multiple levels over the years, and also cost the Akali’s, the government in the last assembly elections. Will the case really reach an ultimate verdict looking into the sacrilege row?

India Ahead decoded the mood of people ahead of crucial polls. Recalling the incident, parents of one of the deceased protesters said, “My son was not a protester.” The local residents mentioned that sacrilege is a major issue along with inflation and drugs in the state.

“Sacrilege issue will move forward only when a charge sheet is filed and Charanjit Singh Channi has taken the first step to expedite the investigation.”
