New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is also a cricket enthusiast, in an exclusive and candid interview with India Ahead News spoke about the India vs South Africa Test Series which concluded today. South Africa on Friday beat India by seven wickets in the third and final Test at Newlands in Cape Town to clinch the three-match series 2-1. The win came as a turnaround for the Proteas who had lost the first Test in Centurion.
On being asked about the loss in the test series, Tharoor said, “It was a comprehensive defeat for the boys and both the batting sides were fragile with the bowlers being impactful.” Tharoor also called for a need to introspect on the reasons behind continuous poor performance of the Indian Team.
“It was an amazing series and we must congratulate South Africa for the win,” he said in conversation with Indranil Basu.
Many believe that India didn’t deserve to win the series, and Tharoor also held the same viewpoint. “Looking on both the fourth innings and on the basis of performance in the entire series, Indian Cricket team didn’t deserved to win. There was not much difference in the first and second innings but it was totally dependent on 3rd and 4th innings, where South Africa made a mark by taking seven wickets and it was a comprehensive win.”
On being asked about controversy around Virat Kohli’s captaincy, Tharoor replied, “Kohli must be feeling a bit unappreciated on not being given the ODI team captaincy when Rohit Sharma was found to be injured. Virat Kohli is elite by himself and it was abrupt decision to quit T20 captaincy. It was a peculiar decision when Kohli himself expressed the desire to continue as ODI captain.”
Virat Kohli on Thursday courted controversy after he lost his cool on the field following a DRS call that saved South African skipper Dean Elgar. Elgar was caught plumb by spinner R Ashwin in front of the stumps and umpire Marais Erasmus raised his finger. But the decision was overturned with the ball tracker suggesting that the ball would have gone over the stumps.
A fuming Kohli showed his anger at the end of the over, going up to the stumps and saying: “Focus on your team as well when they shine the ball eh, not just the opposition. Trying to catch people all the time.”
Ashwin was also caught saying: “You should find better ways to win Supersport”, while India vice-captain was heard commenting: “Whole country playing against XI guys”
