Himachal Pradesh Flash Floods: Toll Rises, Several Missing As Cloudburst Wreak Havoc In Lahaul-Spiti

Himachal Pradesh yet again receives the wrath of mother nature as flash floods were triggered by a cloudburst in state's tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti.

With more rainfall in store, the state of Himachal Pradesh yet again receives the wrath of mother nature as flash floods were triggered by a cloudburst in state’s tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti on 27 July. According to the reports the incident took place at Udaipur in Lahaul at around 8 PM. On 26 July, the director of IMD Himachal Pradesh, Surender Paul had said that Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti and Chamba would receive rain after which the low-lying areas were put on high alert.

A senior disaster management official has said that one person was killed while nine went missing in flash floods in Lahaul-Spiti while another man was reported missing from the Chamba district. According to the official, two tents of labourers and a private JCB have been washed away. The state police and the ITBP teams were deployed for searching missing people but a heavy flow of water hampered the search operation. The operations were resumed on 28 July.

Several people were evacuated from district’s Darcha village after the water level rose in the Bhaga river following a heavy spell of rain. Several roads have also been blocked and around 60 vehicles are stuck due to multiple landslides and flash floods that occurred in various parts of Lahaul-Spiti. The National Highway-3 which is the Chandigarh-Manali Highway has also been blocked for traffic movement due to a landslide in Mandi district.
