Indian track and field athlete Avinash Sable broke a 30-year-old record of Bahadur Prasad in 5000m, setting a new record of 13:25.65 at the Sound Track Meet in the USA. The 27-year-old broke the old record of 13:29.70.
This record set by Sable makes him the only Indian to achieve the feat. Avinash is an army man from a humble family in Beed, Maharashtra. Born into a family of farmers, he would walk 6 kms to go to school. He holds a national record in 3000m steeplechase
when he won a gold medal at the 24th National Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships in 2021.
He is the first steeplechaser from India since 1952 to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics
where he finished just a spot outside the finals. He has steadily improved his timing with every race he participated. He’s expected to shine in the Olympics and World Championships.
