Jigmee Bhutia, a monk from Gangtok, Sikkim, has been garnering appreciation for his dance moves. He loves to groove to film songs and has become quite popular on Instagram because of his dance reels. His follower count has been increasing and he has more than 22 thousand followers on Instagram now, where he goes by the name, Monks Himalayan.
He says that though dance was a childhood hobby, it was in 2021, that he started making videos after he and 100 others at the monastery tested positive. He sent the dance videos to the families of the monks who had tested positive, to assure them that they were doing fine. Soon after, Jigmee Bhutia started making Instagram reels too.
He says that he has received a mixed bag of reactions on his reels. While his friends supported him, some of his seniors did get angry initially.
While Bhutia is praised by his followers, he has also been a victim of trolling. However, he feels happy for the appreciation he receives, and chooses to ignore the negative comments. “It is unfair if I show my anger on the trolls despite being a monk”, he says.
During the tough times that the world is going through, Bhutia’s dance reels bring joy to many of those who watch them. He says that, at a time when there is so much frustration and anxiety in the world, he wants to spread positivity and cheer among people through his reels.
