Debutant director PS Vinothraj’s Koozhangal has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards 2022 in the Best International Feature Film category. The film has been produced by South superstar Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan’s Rowdy Pictures banner.
The powerful Tamil-language narrative starring newcomers Chellapandi and Karuththadaiyaan follows an alcoholic abusive husband who sets out with his young son to find his wife and bring her back.
Koozhangal has been feted in several international film festivals, including Shanghai International Film Festival and Indian Film Festival of Los A ngeles.
Titled “Pebbles” in English, it has previously won the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam Film fest in February 2021.
It is a simple art-centric film which is new in an industry which is otherwise dominated by larger-than-life glamorous films.
No Indian film has ever won an Oscar. The last Indian film to even make it to the final five in the international feature category was Lagaan. The movie starring Aamir Khan and directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar was released 20 years ago.
