Tokyo Olympics 2020: India’s First Fencing Athlete Bhavani Devi Exits From Olympics, Says ‘Sorry’

CA Bhawani Devi scripted history in the Fencing event at Tokyo 2020 by winning the opening match against Tunisia’s Nadia Ben Azizi. Devi has certainly put Indian fencing on the Olympic map as the game remains largely dominated by the western countries. Bhavani Devi was the sole representative of India at fencing in the Tokyo Olympics this year.

The star fencer has become the first Indian swordswoman to perform in the Olympics and also to win the match with a huge point difference in the first round. However, what followed was a heartbreak for the Indian, as she lost the round of 32 match against world number 3 Manon Brunet from France.

Devi expressed her disappointment on her exit from Tokyo 2020 in a series of heartfelt tweets.

In order to encourage and keep her spirits high, Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to the fencer’s tweet by saying wins and losses are a part of life.

Bhavani Devi did miss out on her chances but she gave her all in her first-ever appearance at the Olympics. Her being able to put up a fight and not go down easily, even when the result became inevitable, shows her perseverance and passion for the game. Devi believes that the game is not over yet and hopes that Indian players will win medals and make the country proud. The fencer has moved past her Tokyo 2020 heartbreak and will now start preparing for Paris Olympics 2024.
