Udhampur Potters Promote Earthern Diyas To Keep Tradition Alive

Potter Haridesh and his family has now appealed to the government to not allow the sale of Chinese products and encourage the sale of local products in order to keep Dogra tradition alive.

Though the Chinese wax candles and electric lights have outdone earthen diyas for illuminating homes on Diwali, many potters from Udhampur district are attempting to follow the motto ‘Vocal for Local’ as said by Prime Minister Narendra Modi by making earthern diyas to revive the dying art of pottery.

For Haridesh Kumar, potter from Village Magani, who makes and promotes earthern lamps, the change has already started ushering in.

Haridesh not only used to make these diyas but was also involved in selling them during Deepawali for the last 50 years.

He decided to leave the business and focus on promoting the same as it became difficult to run a livelihood.

Haridesh and his family has now appealed to the government to not allow the sale of Chinese products and encourage the sale of local products in order to keep Dogra tradition alive.
