Uttarakhand Floods: Why The State Is Facing Frequent Floods

Overflowing lakes ,Floods, Washing away roads, houses, and trees.

Uttarakhand is facing devastating floods, the second time this year. Several have died, and there’s widespread destruction. Ten districts have recorded between 100 and 500 millimetres of rainfall in three days.

Naini Lake in Nainital city overflowed, flooding roads and homes. Experts say the Himalayan state, a popular tourist spot, is seeing the effects of both climate change and rampant construction.

They also say that other ecological changes in Uttarakhand have caused landslides and contributed to other disasters such as flash floods.

They have cited hydro-power projects in the higher reaches of the Himalayas, and excessive and often unchecked construction on steep slopes which cause damage to the region’s fragile ecology.

Higher temperatures have meant lesser snow in the Himalayas – and this, coupled with heavy rains, is pushing large volumes of water downstream, triggering flash floods.

The main reason this time is a low pressure area over the state that attracted winds from the Bay of Bengal. Another factor was western disturbances, a phenomenon when areas of “disturbed air pressure” travel to India from the west, carrying moisture all the way from the Atlantic Ocean.

Overall, climate change, rising temperatures and increased human activity in the hills have had a significant impact on the increase of such weather events in Uttarakhand.
