Legendary singer and music composer Bappi Lahiri, passed away in a Mumbai hospital, news agency PTI reported on Wednesday morning quoting a doctor. The veteran singer was 69, and is survived by his wife Chitrani Lahiri, son Bappa and daughter Rema.

Lahiri passed away on Tuesday night at the CritiCare Hospital in Juhu. Netizens paid their last respects to the music legend, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, filmmakers Ashoke Pandit, Hansal Mehta and film critics like Taran Adarsh.

Born Alokesh Lahiri, the singer-composer was a familiar figure for many with his trademark gold chains that he wore for luck and his sunglasses and was known for his songs in several films of the late 70s-80s. These included “Chalte Chalte”, “Disco Dancer”, and “Sharaabi”.

Bappi Lahiri recently mourned the demise of his mother-figure and legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar by sharing a monochrome picture in which he could be seen as a little boy, sitting on the lap of the late icon. In the caption, he wrote, “Maa!”
