Waterlogging Ordeal: Incessant Rains Claim 3 Lives In Delhi-NCR, PWD Cancels Leaves Of Engineering Staff

Heavy rainfall in Delhi and the national capital region has led to traffic snarls at many places due to waterlogging. The arrival of monsoon may have brought much needed respite from humidity and heatwaves in the national capital, but in the last 24 hours, three people have reportedly died of drowning. In a fresh incident on July 20, a 9-year-old boy drowned in a sewer in Holambi Kalan area of Delhi.

The incessant rains and waterlogging has even claimed a life of an unidentified man who died after allegedly drowning in the Rajiv Chowk Underpass. The body was fished out late evening by divers from the underpass which was filled with water up to 6 to 8 ft. Officials said that whether the man was trying to cross the underpass on foot or in a vehicle will be clear once the rainwater is flushed out.

On July 19, a 27-year-old man drowned at a railway underpass in South Delhi’s Pul Prahladpur, while he was reportedly trying to take a selfie in the rains. Several low-lying areas being inundated due to the downpour. Visuals across Delhi-NCR show how the traffic movement has got completely disrupted on July 20.

Delhi’s Public Works Department has cancelled the leaves of its engineering staff till September 30 to ensure there is no waterlogging in the city during the monsoon season. The PWD department has also asked the officials to recall the engineering staff already on leave and cancel sanctioned leaves, except in case of health issues or an unprecedented situation.
