India’s Nikhat Zareen won a historic gold medal in the 52 kg category at the World Boxing Championships in Istanbul on May 19. She displayed a stunning performance to beat her opponent from Thailand.
A lightweight boxer, she was India’s first ever representative in the IBA Women Boxing Championship. The 25-year-old boxer is much talked about in the boxing fraternity.
Hailing from Telangana, she began boxing when she was 12 years old. Belonging to a middle class family with three sisters, taking up boxing as her career was not an easy choice to make. Yet, she beat the odds to become the boxer she wanted to and won a historic gold for India.
In 2010, Zareen won a gold medal at Telangana State Championship. Her big break came in 2011, when she became the World Junior boxing champion in the 50 kg category. In 2017, she underwent a surgery on her right shoulder, but bounced back soon after recovery. In 2019, she won a silver medal at Thailand Open, followed by a bronze in Asian Championships, among other medals.
