New Delhi: The Delta Variant has become the dominant variant in the United States of America as it now accounts for an estimated 93.4 per cent of Covid-19 cases in the country. The figures published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that the data included four sub-lineages of Delta mutations, all of which are classified as variants of concern (VOC) by WHO and CDC.
The major chunk of cases belongs to the B.1.617.2 lineage that comprises a whopping 83.4 per cent while the other three sublineages account for 10 per cent of cases in the USA. The figures are for weeks between July 7-31, 2021.
In areas like Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska, Delta variant accounts for more than 98 per cent of Coronavirus cases in the country.
The CDC has maintained that Delta is the most contagious coronavirus mutant so far in the pandemic, but Covid-19 vaccines still provide strong protection against it. Nearly all hospitalisations and deaths are among the unvaccinated.
Still, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cited the delta’s surge for its updated advice that fully vaccinated people return to wearing masks indoors in areas with high transmission.
The change is based on recent research suggesting that vaccinated people who get infected with the delta variant can spread it to others, even if the vaccinated don’t get seriously ill. The new guidance helps protect the unvaccinated, including children who aren’t yet eligible for the shots, and others who are at high-risk for serious illness if infected.
Amid surging cases of the Covid-19 Delta variant, New York City on Tuesday announced that it will require proof of vaccination for employees and customers for indoor dining, fitness and entertainment facilities in a first-of-its-kind approach in the US to fight the pandemic.
The new policy, announced by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, will be phased in over the coming weeks. The City has been working with the business community and getting inputs. The final details of the policy will be announced and implemented in the week of August 16.
