New Delhi: The International Day of Happiness is observed every year across the globe on March 20. The aim behind celebrating the day is to highlight the importance of happiness and make people understand that happiness is one of the best gifts you can give.
As per the United Nations (UN), this day is ‘celebrated as a way to recognise the importance of happiness in the lives of people around the world’. The UN had started to celebrate the International Day of Happiness in 2013 but a resolution for the same was passed on July 12, 2012.
The resolution was initiated by Bhutan which emphasised on the importance of national happiness over national income thereby adopting the Gross National Happiness over Gross National Product. International Day of Happiness is organised by UN to promote the idea that happiness is a fundamental goal.
It is a day to value your happiness and other people’s happiness. The World Happiness Report 2021 was released by United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network earlier on Friday, March 19. The report recognised the toll the COVID-19 pandemic has taken on the happiness and general well being of the people.
In the report, Finland was ranked as the happiest country in the world for the fourth time. Denmark, Switzerland, Iceland and the Netherlands followed at the second, third, fourth and fifth ranks respectively. Afghanistan was ranked the least happy country.
While India ranked 139 out of 149 countries. In last year’s report, India had ranked 144 out of 156 countries. Among the neighbouring countries, China ranked 84th, Bangladesh 101st, Pakistan 105th and Sri Lanka 129th.
The theme of this year’s International Day of Happiness is ‘Happiness For All, Forever’. It implies the significance of happiness. The day recognises happiness as the most essential need in a person’s life and links it with the overall well-being. The day also aims to establish the key role that happiness must play while setting public policy objectives.
Happiness is linked to economic growth which will lead to sustainable development and well-being of people. Here are some quotes and wishes that you can share it with your family and friends.
