New Delhi: A suspected member of the team that murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, Khalid Alotaibi, was arrested at Charles de Gaulle airport outside Paris on Tuesday, reported judicial and airport sources.
The 33-year-old suspect was detained by border police on the basis of an arrest warrant issued by Turkey, while he was at the airport to take a flight to Riyadh from Charles de Gaulle airport.
As per the reports, the Turkish court since 2020 began to try in absentia 20 suspects over the murder of Khashoggi. Two of the former aides to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman were also being suspected by the court.
Khashoggi, a prominent Saudi who lived in self-exile in the United States and wrote for The Washington Post, was brutally murdered as soon as he entered the building of the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. His body has never been retrieved.
The killing of the journalist in 2018 sparked international outrage, with Western intelligence agencies accusing Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of authorising the murder.
Authorities have been hunting for his murderers since 2018.
