The United States and the United Kingdom reacted sharply after the Chinese government banned london-based international news channel BBC World News, saying that it has banned the channel for ‘Serious content violation’. According to the Chinese state media, the Chinese broadcasting regulator banned BBC World News as it undermined national interests. The move comes after the UK communications regulator revoked the license of China Global Television Network in its country on February 4.
UK Foreign Secretary and First Secretary of State Dominic Raab called the move banning BBC ‘unacceptable’ in a post, and said, “China’s decision to ban BBC World News in mainland China is an unacceptable curtailing of media freedom. China has some of the most severe restrictions on media & internet freedoms across the globe, & this latest step will only damage China’s reputation in the eyes of the world.”

Meanwhile, The US State Department Spokesperson Ned Price during a press briefing also condemned the move calling it ‘troubling’. “We absolutely condemn the People Republic of China’s (PRC) decision to ban BBC World News. The PRC maintains one of the most controlled, most oppressive, least free information spaces in the world. It is troubling that the PRC restricts outlets and platforms from operating freely in China,” said Price on Thursday (February 11).
According to Xinhua, China’s broadcasting regulator on Thursday (February 11) announced that it will be pulling BBC World News off the air in the country for serious content violation.
“As the channel fails to meet the requirements to broadcast in China as an overseas channel, BBC World News is not allowed to continue its service within Chinese territory. The NRTA will not accept the channel’s broadcast application for the new year,” the regulator said in a statement released by Xinhua.
As per Xinhua, the National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) said BBC World News was found to have ‘seriously violated regulations on radio and television management and on overseas satellite television channel management in its China-related reports’ which went against the requirements and has ‘undermined China’s national interests and ethnic solidarity’.
